Your motivation letter for this activity

Hi Polish guys!

I’m Tiago Matos, born and raised in Portugal! I’m still a teenager, therefor full of Energy to spend in the two weeks of ?natural born explorers?.

I study Computer Engineering, in Porto’s Engineering Faculty, I’m in the 2th year, and to be honest, computers are to boring for me! Being seated down in front of a laptop all night long is not very funny… that’s why I want, i need, I’m dying to spend 2 weeks at Poland with 35 another crazy guys like me!

Since little that I was always pushing myself to the limits… I don’t know why. Nowadays I always trying to be the person who arrives home later after a big party. But getting bored of always winning :P

I never tried kayaking,rafting or hydrospeed climblig(I even don’t know what is the last one!), but I already too excited just in thinking about them!(Ok, not that kind of excitement! :P). Really, I love extreme sports, specially the ones that involve nature!

Poland?

I’ve never been to Poland, but I already heard about your national-home-made-drinks, and I want to taste them (again!). Traveling through Poland and visiting 5 different places also seems me very promising and challenging.

And, of course, you don’t need to be worry with small details as sleeping in the wild nature, sleeping 2 hours a day… I used to do all that and always with a big smile in the face, JUST TRY ME!

SEE YOU!

Your motivation letter for this activity

I?m probably one of the people applying to your course who lives the farthest! We are separated by far more than 7000km! Can you imagine! Can you imagine where I live? Porto in Portugal! Yes! I know? It seems like a really exotic place for you guys. I feel the same way about you country!

I?m just in the beginning of this letter and I?m already concerned about two things: how I can overcome the distance between you and me and how I will survive the cold that should be over there!

First let me introduce myself so that you get to know me a little better before the real meeting in March :). In short: my name is Tiago Matos, I?m 20 years old and I study Informatics and Computing Engineering.

These are three simple facts that I could use to describe myself but I will do a little bit better are try to focus on some of my characteristics.

I?m a funny guy. I really like to hear all the people around me laughing because that way my mood is also enhanced and I like to feel that everybody around me is happy.

I?m an easy-going person, I get along with everybody that I meet and I?m looking forward to starting my new friendship with all the participants and, of course, with the organizers as well, because it is very important for me to know the locals.

I don?t like vodka very much. Hei! That?s good news for you, vodka lovers. Here it goes the story. Once upon a time there where two teenagers on a school trip to London and nothing better to overcome the rainy days of UK than a drink. So, one of them (not me because I have almost a baby face) let his beard grow a bit more, filled himself with courage and entered a drink store with a few pounds in his pocket and got out with a big smile and a big bottle of vodka. The rest of the story you can imagine?

But of course, I?ll make an effort to drink your vodka. I?ll have to live with such cold I?ll have to keep myself warm with something! And for that nothing better than a shot of vodka!

Open-minded is the best word that can describe my personality! I?m ready to overcome any challenge that you present to me! Just try me!

I?m a party lover. I bet you that I would be the very first person getting in the parties and will be the very last one getting out of it (I can also give a hand cleaning up the mess after the party  Well? I?m just trying to give a good impression of how helpful I can be.). I?ll take the Latin way of dance to your parties (Well? I have to be honest, this is just a cliché that I had to write down because, in fact, I?m an awful dancer. But, on the other hand I?m a better drinker? maybe that?s why I cannot coordinate myself very well on the dancing floor. I?ll try my best!

I?ll be very attentive in classes. As you can imagine HI-Tech has everything to do with my field of study, some of this will be a great opportunity to develop myself and of course I?ll not waste my time sleeping in classes.

I don?t eat very much. I?ll try to eat as less as possible not to ruin your food budget. I?m kidding, of course. By the way I really want to taste Russian dishes, I don?t have the slightest idea of what will be presented to me to eat but don?t worry I?m gladly used to eat anything at my reach.

Vinho do Porto! Do you know the famous wine from Porto? I?ll take some bottles with me to Russia and I promise that you will be marvelled with the sweet taste of that precious wine! Trust me, you even start thinking twice before drinking the strong vodka with my wine in reach. So don?t forget: without me you don?t have Porto wine!

Now that you know me a little better let me try to convince you to pick me to your event. I?ll show you why I?m the right person for your winter course!

I?m very interested in the contents of the course, finding out how intellectual systems think and how robot accomplish human tasks. That is right what I was needing to complement my studies. I started learning programming in logic this semester so this course will give me the chance to see what this kind of programming can do. I?m curious about what I will see. Will it be robots picking up objects, playing football or will they do something that I?ve never seen or imagined possible? I?m anxious to see what you have to show to me!

I really want to have contact with Russian people and nothing better than sitting at the same desk with Russian students. This will be a great opportunity for me to get in touch with your culture, language and habits because for me better that being in a place is to talk and interact with people from that place. So please give me the possibility to establish a cultural interchange between the people from the most western European country and most eastern!

I?ve never been under such bad weather conditions. You can see the difference, Portugal, a warm place, with temperatures oscillating between 35ºC in summer and 10ºC in winter and Russia with lots of minus degrees in winter and a few below 0 in the summer. You really have to let me be the first one undressing and jump into the snow after a Russian ?banya? (that according to Google is similar to a sauna. Can you see how curious and interested I am?). And of course, you?ll have the chance to laugh with my falls in the ski crawling because I?ve never tried skiing. But I?m an adventurous guy I will always get up and try again? of course if no bone in my body breaks :).

I?ve heard that Ekaterinburg is rich is sights, therefore I?m really interested in seeing the architectural monuments of Russian classicism that populate your city. I also want to feel what is like to be in a 1.5M people city 7000km away from home!

Are you still reading? That?s good news? So I just want to finish my letter saying that while writing this letter I already started thinking of great adventure that will be the journey to Ekaterinburg, the promising classes with Russian friends, the parties till the sunshine and the completely new environment that will involve me in your distant city! And if you don?t choose me, at least this letter gave me the possibility of dreaming about your winter course!

Don?t let me down!

I truly hope to see you in March,

Tiago Matos

Activity specific questions

how are you?? =):);)

I?m not very well! I?m too anxious about the possibility of being almost two weeks in Ekaterinburg and I cannot have some decent sleep! But there?s something that makes me a little bit happier: there?s a cure for this sickness: your approval to my application! So why are you making me suffer more, accept me in your winter course!

And you what about you? Also anxious to met this crazy Portuguese fellow?

do you have any experience on field of mechatronics or robot construction?

what kind of?

I have some experience with Lego Mindstorms I already constructed some robot vehicles the best that I designed was car for a race organized by the Portuguese Lego User Group. In this race, called Grand P-RIS, two robots run on a gray track delimited by a white border on one side and a black one on other side. The rules forbid following one of the borders, which the robot can use only to correct its direction. The rules also say that only the sensors and motors included in the original RIS kit are allowed, though there’s no limitation for other Lego parts. Mine didn?t succeed but it worth the try!

BEST Engineering Competition: Create Your Future, Ekaterinburg, Russia

February 23rd, 2008 § 0

#Finally, right before starting my internship and saying goodbye to student and BEST life I got finally accepted to Russia

Hey, Tiago is calling,

It’s with some sadness but, especially, nostalgia that I’ writing this Motivation Letter… this will be probably my last time writing one for a BEST event. Next semester I’ll have my final internship through AIESEC and them Alumni status is on way!

So no better way for presenting myself than tell you how has been my BEST life till now…

Everything started by the curiosity about a nice poster in my University promoting the application for the Summer Courses on the far way year of 2003. It announced really crazy destinations and incredible possibilities. I’ll be frankly honest: I’ve never believed it was true. It was too good to be true.

I firstly applied to Croatia but the ?Waiting List? was my only award!

Nevertheless I’ve joined LBG Porto on that same summer but too many different people and cultures left me a bit confused. With some courage I became the BEST ERASMUS Responsible and on that same spring of 2005 I was designated the LBG Porto Delegate for GA Chania.

Living one week with 250 people in a fancy resort by the Mnediterranean sea impressed me a lot and I’ve learned there some nice stuff:

-An International Evening around the hotel’s swimming pool can finish inside it;

-Connections are important. I could not remember what trully happened every last night very cheaply!

-People can cry for other that they met for just some days;

-Not all the girls are so angelical as my Portuguese friends;

-A kiss can be shared for more than two people.

Next external event made me pay almost 400? to get to Sofia (by then I wasn’t very proficient booking on-line…) to participate in an unforgettable event!Living in a 4 star hotel suite with mini bar can be very funny. I’ve also learned some new stuff:

-Sneaking into the hotels jacuzzi on late hours can be very tempting, almost irresistable;

-Having long friendships with people I’ve meet for just a couple of days is a every day reallity;

-Making a ?Europe Tour? during an International Evening gives you the right of asking in the next day ?Did I done that?? (Tasting at least one of all the countries drinks is by now a default in every IE by me. I just need the right ?co-pilot? every time. Would you like to be the next one?);

-My name and ?BEST Lover? could be printed in the same certificate…

On that same summer I decided to diverge my InterRail to Finland to Co-Organize their event!

Some big news over there too:

-Some Finns are not so cold as you except and other are even colder;

-Some people can run naked from sauna-lake and lake-sauna while grabbing on Estonian vodka;

-My name could be printed in 3 certificates saying ?BEST Sausage Maker? and ?BEST Drinker? and the other I cannot tell you know…

Well I had some other crazy events but if will tell you know about them maybe I won’t have nothing more to say to you on the face-to-face…or maybe I’ll have much more! I can only tell that Alpine JAM and ?Slopes are still alive? were also great! And of course, I also there some new stuff!

Maybe you would like to know some specific things about me but I’ll keep it short:

Tiago Matos, finishing Master degree in Computer Engineering, Ex-ERASMUS student in Germany and ‘the crazy’ as nickname…

See you soon (prospective best friend),

Tiago Matos

BEST Engineering Competition - BEChilly!, Tallin, Estonia

February 23rd, 2008 § 0

#Tallin is one of the most though places to be accepted and I was no exception. This letter seems ok but wasn’t enough! Oh! and I remember how badly I wanted to visit Estonia that 2006’s winter.

?Do You like lectures? You do? Sorry, there will be none here!?

Well between all the things that I can do in life? either between the ones that I can do standing up and the ones that I can do laid down I can find lots of other better things than lectures. So if not having lectures is not a problem for you neither it is for me!

?There will be no sitting down, no sleeping and no boredom ? just pure competition!?

I had to find the meaning of ?sleep? on a dictionary because I was not really aware of what it was:

?In humans and many animals: a readily reversible state of natural unconsciousness during which the body’s functional powers are restored, and physical movements are minimal.?

With this I still don?t understand most part of the sentence. ?Unconsciousness? is a term that for me is always connected with alcohol. Also don?t understand why does a person needs their ?powers to be restored? in just some few days (don?t we have them enough?) and, last but not least, I cannot see the purpose of having ?minimal physical movements?. How, on this way, will I party?

?Boredom? was also a difficult word for me. I search and came across to the definition ?the state of being bored? and bored as ?To make someone feel tired and uninterested, by being dull, tedious, uninteresting, unimaginative, etc.?

I also have lots of problems with this definition? When thinking on a BEST event it?s impossible to think of people ?dull, tedious, uninteresting, unimaginative? it?s just an antagonistic combination. It?s like as seeing me drinking water in a glass of shot. It doesn?t feel right!

If I come across to such a person over there in Tallin I?ll be the first person to bring him/her to the beer tap and filling up his/her cup or/and throat.

?Come to Tallinn and test your abilities! Furthermore, come and experience Estonia: sauna, Vana Tallinn and beautiful Estonian people are waiting for You!?

I?ve never been to Tallin and I?ve never experienced Estonian neither beautiful Estonians (at the end none Estonians at all, beautiful or not) :P I cannot wait to book my flight with Easyjet and fly to your open arms (I?m waiting a really warm welcome reception :) ).

Technical remark: is it also a hygienic obligation to go naked to the Estonian saunas, as it is in Finland? Hope so :P

The famous Estonian liqueur, in english Old Tallinn, is also something that I want to taste. I?ve never heard about it. Just read that is possible to make a cocktail called the “hammer and sickle” where Vana Tallinn is mixed with Russian champagne. Maybe we could do a taste contest between Vana Talinn and Porto Wine. I promisse that I?ll fill you up with Port. Boyscout promise.

?But remember, it might BEChilly here, so wrap up warm!?

Chilly? That?s a problem? I?m used to the Mediterranean whether and as I saw in your website that the average temperature of a January day is -5 degrees I was shocked. In Portugal I could say it?s around POSITIVE 10 degrees. It never goes under 0!

But ok? I?m now studying as an ERASMUS in Nuernberg, Germany, and I had for the first time a snowing day! I ran on the same day to buy a scarf, gloves and a pair of warm boots because of how afraid I was from that kind of whether :) There?s a long way to go till February here in Nuernberg so I think I?ll be prepared for the Nordic cold. Or maybe not :)

Now that I?ve writed all this nonsense it?s polite for me to introduce myself.

I?m Tiago Matos from Porto, studying Informatics and Computer Engineering (hey! I?m not a nerd? just choose that degree for the good money ;) ) and I recently had my 21st anniversary.

It would be to boring for you if I started characterising myself with adjectives such as easy-going, open-minded, party friendly and more and more on the same style(not that they aren?t true)? so just let me say: pick me and let me bring the Latin heat to cold Tallin!

And why BEC?

Teamwork, of course! The cooperative effort by the members of a group or team to achieve a common goal.

That?s all about teamwork on these events! And that really excites me! Specially, because that the common goal can be the execution of a given task, the complete drunkenness of the team or putting everybody on the ?party mood?. Depends of the time, place and situation, but everything is about teamwork.

I really like all that goals with a little bit more emphases on the second two! Hey! C?mon I also like Engineering Competitions? And because I really like them I?ve already been the organizer on my faculty of a 60 people?s EC and I?m looking forward to see when we host a BEC at Porto for the first time. Maybe I can give a hand, or even, both hands ;P after this experience in Tallin (if you let me so? I hope you will be reasonable ;) ) There?s no active people on my LBG that already been in a BEC and I really want to contribute?

Truly hope to see you in February.

T?au,

Tiago Matos

Be like God - Control your climate, Sofia, Bulgaria

February 23rd, 2008 § 0

#This was my first BEST course and, most likely, my favorite event. We stayed in a four-star hotel, using jacuzzi and ridding a cab for one hour to the university. I made friends for life and, with one of them, more than friendship. This was one of my most inpired letters, where I mocked with the course name “be like god” and the “Genesis” chapter of the Holy Book!

Control de climate?! I’ll explain everything from the beginning?

Let me be like God?

We needed some support to the climate, a place for him to exist, so I remembered? I don’t I create a new planet? The universe is to boring? I need something alive that helps me pass my time.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

But to have a climate we needed some power supply? Something that would warm up that cold place. So I had a genius idea and I invented the light! Is a renewable source of energy that practically never ends and has the power of bronzing the skin of those fancy girls in the beach.

Genesis 1:3 and God said, ‘Let light be’ and light is.

Genesis 1:4 And God saw the light that [it is] good, and God separate between the light and the darkness.

Now that we had Earth with sun we needed another source of energy, with such strength that could shape the world, eroding rocks, transporting it and sedimenting it. And of course girls also needed water to intercalate the sunbaths.

Genesis 1:7 And God made the expanse, and it separated between the waters which [are] under the expanse, and the waters which [are] above the expanse: and it is so.

Dam! I already talked in rocks? so it seems that I had to create some portion of dry land!

Genesis 1:9 And God said, `Let the waters under the heavens be collected unto one place, and let the dry land be seen` and it is so.

Genesis 1:10 And God called to the dry land `Earth` and to the collection of the waters He hath called `Seas` and God saw that [it is] good.

Well, let?s have an overview about all the things that I created so far?

Earth, light, seas and dry land. Ok, we have the basis? But this is just alike other planets? This one must be different there?s must be life in it! Before creating life I need 02. Many people learn in school that first there were animals that breathed C02? but I see that as a bunch of lies, as you?ll see.

Genesis 1:11 And God said, `Let the earth yield tender grass, herb sowing seed, fruit-tree (whose seed [is] in itself) making fruit after its kind, on the earth` and it is so.

Genesis 1:12 And the earth brought forth tender grass, herb sowing seed after its kind, and tree making fruit (whose seed [is] in itself) after its kind; and God saw that [it is] good;

Now that we had 02 I not include the other living beings?

Genesis 1:21 And God prepared the great monsters, and every living creature that is creeping, which the waters have teemed with, after their kind, and every fowl with wing, after its kind, and God saw that [it is] good.

But these animals were to selvage? so I had the idea of cattle some animals that would be more helpful to the human being.

Genesis 1:24 And God said, `Let the earth bring forth the living creature after its kind, cattle and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after its kind` and it is so.

I was always seeing that everything was good? but not good enough I wanted a rational living being. But creating a human being along with the other animals was not sufficient, I wanted that this being rule over the rest. Ruling in Earth this human being would be able to control the environment and the climate!

Genesis 1:26 And God said, `Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness, and let them rule over fish of the sea, and over fowl of the heavens, and over cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that is creeping on the earth.`

But for sure you want to now more about me!

All-powerful, Omnipotent.

I?m full of energy! I?m capable of being learning during the day, social activities during the night and be the one waking up all the people in the world in the next morning just like a happy rooster!

Compassion

I have lots of compassion for those who don?t like to be spiritual stimulated by drinks? So what do I do? I stimulate my spirit for those who don’t want and transfer a little bit of that mood to them with my funny jokes and laughs!

Eternal

This is how the majority of people that come across with me see me: Eternal, because I?m hard to forget? So please let me conquer your hearts 

Faithful, Trustworthy

You can trust on me I’ll behave like I should (and like I shouldn’t?)

Impartial

Will be impartial in my judges, will give a fair judge to the drinks and food that you’ll bring to me.

Incomprehensible

Yes! I know! It’s hard to understand such a great individuality such as me  cof ,cof

Unchanging, Immutable

From the first day till the last day will be the same as me! So you can expect a funny, extroverted and open-minded person.

ALEXANDER NEVSKI MEMORIAL CHURCH, ROTUNDA OF ST. GEORGE, ST. SOFIA CHURCH, THE NATIONAL PALACE OF CULTURE, THE CHURCH OF ST. NEDELYA, VASSIL LEVSKI MONUMENT, SOFIA UNIVERSITY, DRAGALEVTSI, BOYANA, MOUNT VITOSHA.

I’ve already seen these places from heaven but I haven’t had the opportunity of touching in it! Please give me that chance

That’s all my friends; truly hope to ‘touch’ you in April!

Tiago Matos

Activity specific questions

How do you see the future of the thermo control systems?

(Answer just with one 1-2 sentences)

I think that the future of thermo control systems will be the application of the systems used in aircrafts and spacecrafts. Especially the refrigerating systems used to regulate temperature in ESA?s spacecrafts like Rosetta?s thermal control.

What is the future application of the renewable heating sources?

(Answer just with one 1-2 sentences)

The markets for renewable heating sources (biomass, solar thermal, geothermal) have a substantial potential for growth, and could replace substantial amounts of the fossil fuels and electricity, which are currently used for heating purposes. The future of heating sources will be mainly the increasing application on domestic heating.

Wich is the most economical way to gain energy?

(Answer just with one 1-2 sentences)

The lowest cost to produce energy is certanly the solar energy.

The main factor here is that you can get very large blocks of power coming from solar energy in one single location.

And to store this energy the future is store in H2 gives the best answer when demanded.

Your motivation letter for this activity

Hi Austrian friends!

My name is Tiago Matos, I?m a 20-year-old nice guy and I study Informatics and Computing Engineering.

This is quite a short description about me so I?ll be a little bit better.

I?m a maniac about sports I?ve already practised a bunch of them like basketball, athletics, football, taekwondo, in-line, BTT and a few other that I don?t recall.

But one thing is missing in my CV: Winter Sports! And I?m thrilled to start learning ski!

Friends for me are the best that a man can have! I?m a nice, easy-going person that likes to get along with everybody that crosses my way! So I?m already enthusiastic about the friends that I will make in Mönichkirchen.

Well? I?m confused, should I say that parties ?are the best that a man can have?? Well we cannot have parties without friends so? In fact I?m a party lover! I really like going out at night with different friends here in the place where I study, Porto, and I also like to meet other friends in different cities! So I promise that you need to drag me out from every party, otherwise I will only be satisfied when seeing the sunshine! Ok? I know I?m overreacting. I?ll behave!

Open-minded is the best word that can describe my personality! I?m ready to overcome any challenge that you put to me! Just try me!

As I said I?m a young guy, I still have all that energy that a teenager should have so you must be ready for a guy that can ski all day, parties all night and still has a fresh face in the next morning!

My favourite pleasure is to laugh! And I like everybody around me laughing to! So advise your mood responsible (if you have one) that will compete with him for the job! Really, making people smile gives me a great satisfaction!

Now that you know a little bit more abut myself let try to convince you to choose me for that place in your Leisure Course.

You?ll have the opportunity to laugh a lot with all my falls during all the ski sessions that you have planned for us. Because besides being a beginner on that sport I?m really determined when facing a new challenge so I?ll expect falling and rising all day long!

I?ll take with me plenty of sweet Porto wine! You have the opportunity to taste one of our best things! Trust me, you won?t want anything else besides Porto.

You have to give me the chance of being a week in contact with snow! I had few experiences with snow so this will be my chance of feeling like a Yeti!

Sauna! I?m really thrilled about getting in the sauna and afterwards jumping into the snow! It is custom to do it naked? As I said I?m really open minded 

I really want to have contact with Austrian people, for me that is one of the most interesting things about visiting a country getting in touch with the locals. So pick me if you want to have a crazy Portuguese friend!

I really want to get to know your culture and traditions better and I also want to represent Portugal in the best way. For that I?m really looking forward to your national night and I know that you also want to taste a fantastic cod fish dish that I?ll prepare to you in the International Evening.

So with all this I just have to say that I?m glad just to apply because while writing this letter I had the chance of dreaming with soft white snow and beautiful Austrian girls! But I have to be sincere, that?s not enough for me. So what are you waiting for?! Choose me to your event and I promise that you won?t regret!

Sincerely waiting to visit Mönichkirchen,

Tiago Matos
